In relation to notions of ‘home', the experience of city-living presents a binary; it is both belonging, and its opposite, uprootedness. Cristiana de Marchi will map space and memory, elaborating the theme by tracking transformations of space in the works of Al Saadi, Ibrahim and Kazem. Yasser Elsheshtawy remembers Dubai’s Shorta neighborhood (Shabiya) (Jumeirah/Al Wasl) and its redevelopment into City Walk Project. In this example of inevitable progress, he locates the potent notion of urban memory – a sense of attachment and connection to place, even as it is transformed. Jason Wee will propose an artistic response to notions of home and belonging within the context of Singapore.
